MATERIAL HANDLING DIAGNOSTIC EXPERT
"After 13 years in the automotive trade, and then 25 years at Canada’s largest MHE dealer,
I founded Misthios Technical Services to provide the specialized, high-level support that warehouse mobile equipment service providers struggle to find in today's labor market."
Misthios Founder and Master Diagnostician
Michael (Mike) J. Brace
The Trenches: 35 Years of Field-Tested Expertise
Mike is a seasoned skilled trades adult educator and master diagnostician. With over 35 years of hands-on field experience, he is a Provincially licensed journeyman Automotive Service Technician in Ontario and a certified Course Manager. His career began in the trenches as an automotive service technician and mobile MHE road service technician, giving him a deep understanding of personal productivity, parts inventory, and the daily pressures faced in an independent mobile service environment.
The Crucible: 15 Years of Socratic Coaching & Technical Support
Mike ultimately spent over 25 years with G.N. Johnston Equipment. Transitioning from the field into a dual-role as a Course Manager and technical support representative, Mike moved away from passive, lecture-based training. Instead, he rigorously applied a performance-based, criterion-referenced learning model developed by the Raymond Corporation's technical training department. The validity of this elite training architecture is undisputed, having earned the prestigious Association for Talent Development (ATD) Excellence in Practice Award.
Operating as a certified Course Manager within this award-winning framework, Mike ensured technicians didn't just sit in a classroom. They acquired new knowledge and then had to "sign up" for one-on-one confirmation sessions with Mike before they were permitted to touch the equipment or advance to the next topic. This required Mike to hold the entire architecture of the training program in his mind simultaneously. He had to know exactly what the technician had learned, what they were currently learning, and what they hadn't covered yet.
Rather than giving them the answers, Mike utilized on-the-fly Socratic questioning. By asking highly targeted, open-ended questions, he forced technicians to recall and process information, guiding them to self-correct their own diagnostic logic, solidifying their knowledge retention.
The Diagnostic Mindset: A Distinct Cognitive Advantage
This intense, 15-year period of one-on-one Socratic coaching forged Mike’s greatest asset: a hyper-analytical, systems-level approach to problem-solving. This environment demanded the ability to listen with extreme attention to detail while simultaneously processing the technician’s logic, identifying the exact moment their comprehension had a gap or misdirection, and calculating the precise question needed to have them come up with the correct path themselves, reinforcing the knowledge retention even further.
Today, this deeply ingrained cognitive processing is what makes Mike an unmatched remote diagnostic expert. When a frustrated technician calls from the field, Mike isn't just listening to the symptoms of the machine. He is rapidly tracking multiple variables, analyzing the technician’s level of expertise, processing their diagnostic data, and instantly formulating the critical questions needed to drill down to the absolute root cause of the failure.
Why Misthios?
In ancient Greece, the term misthios (and later misthophoros) was used to describe a professional who worked for a wage—most notably, the hired mercenaries who fought in the Peloponnesian War. Today, Misthios operates on that same principle. We are the professional 'hired guns' of the mobile industrial diagnostic world. When your technician is losing the battle against a complex electrical problem, you bring Misthios in to turn the tide, locate the target, and secure the fix.
But really... How did it become the name of the company?
The name "Misthios" actually started as a boring, standard-issue acronym. I was trying to describe exactly what I do: I started with Mobile Industrial Service Technician. That spelled out M.I.S.T.. It was a start but it needed more.
I started playing with the letters to expand it, and I'll be completely honest—I’m a massive gaming nerd. At the time, I had logged a ridiculous number of hours into Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, where you play as a mercenary known as a Misthios. In ancient Greece, the word meant a contracted professional or "hired gun."
I looked at my acronym, thought about my business model of being the specialized "hired specialist" for overwhelmed service departments, and the pieces just clicked. I suspect that there may be a few technicians, foremen, and managers unwind with a controller after a brutal 60-hour week on the floor. It may have been familiar to some fellow gamers.
